A macchiato is an espresso shot "marked" or “stained” with a small amount of frothed milk (microfoam).

To make this, especially if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand, first  heat up some milk on the stove or in the microwave to 150/160°F, then froth it using a mini French press or a milk frother; then brew a shot of espresso in a small cup and free pour some milk and microfoam onto the espresso.
